I am trying to set a series of timed doors in my new level but am having a problem with the switches in the wad I am using (catacombs). Setting up the timer triggers etc is no problem..... what I want to know is if it is possible to get the switch to reset after the timer runs out? I dont care which switch I use but I need it to return to its original position so it can be thrown again if the player doesnt get through the door in time......

As far as I know none of the switches return to their original position. But do you need that?

I had a similar problem, I used the switch to trigger a camera which in turn triggered the timed door. On the second throw, I was switching back to the original position but it still triggered the camera and then door.

Hi Inchdix Old Mate.

I know this can be done as I have done it before.

Are you setting the timer to the door or to the switch.

If you are setting it to the door try setting the timer to the switch instead.

Let me know how you get on, can't remeber how I got it to work.

Cheers

Mike

Runningonair...... the way I have constructed the rooms with the switches allows access to only one side hence why I need the switch to return..... Mike..... I have to set the timer in the switch trigger cos if I set a timer on the door trigger I get the "cannot overlap special triggers" message..... however I have worked out how to get the switch to return, I just need to test a bit more to get it working 100% the way I want it to work.....

You will see for yourself soon enough Mike..... LOL

This works but is not 100% but its the best I can get...... the timer has to be set in the switch trigger field or it doesnt work. then click on all 5 trigger flags in OCB for the switch..... you will have to rotate your switch 180 degrees in your map cos the switch will allready be thrown when you get to it..... now the dodgy part..... the trigger will be active if you step on it, you dont need to throw the switch !!!!! (but thats for the player to guess) Howeveronce the timer runs out the switch becomes active again and will do as you expect.... from then on you will have to throw the switch twice to get the door to re-open each time you fail......

Like I say.... not 100%..... but it does the job. You can always add a camera target to show the player what is happeningto the door each time they throw the switch..... lol

errmmm...

I think you would be better off moving the switch so you can get to it from both sides. It's a more elegant solution.

Possibly, Runningonair....... but throwing the switch from the other side would mean that the timer would have to be a lot less stringent..... and therefore pointless..... besides...... I have set up cameras so the player knows exactly whats happening.....

I was also running into this problem, with a similar situation involving timed doors, and swimming through tunnels to get through them.

I came across another 'workaround' of sorts.
The problem you stated is what I was running into, with the square containing the timed switch acting like a pad.

To 'fix' this, surround the switch with triggers (Normal) set to the lever object. When lara passes over one of these switches, it will freeze the lever, and it won't bounce back. It also prevents the door form opening when the square is stepped on again.

The downside is, the switch will only function in one direction (Generally the original orientation). So if it's a leve switch, you hve to allow room on the other side to flip it back. I wound up creating a texture with an on/off position type graphic, and placed it on the wall next to the switch. It's awkward, and crude but it works.

as far as I figured out, not all switches are doing the same with timed doors. Switch_type1 from Library.wad is the best to us it resets after time is up.

Do also keep in mind that not all doortypes act on a timer. For as far i remember doortype4 and doortype5 is to avoid.
